“After working as a Google ambassador, Mozilla student representative and running a campus project for Intel, my first job right after school was with Andela where I was in recruitment. We were recruiting developers. I was fresh from campus and I was heading recruitment for Andela Nigeria. That meant that I was the go to guy for recruitment.
Sometime during my first two months at Andela, I made a crazy error in an email I had sent. I had sent the email with the error to like 10 people. So I had to correct myself and resend the email to these people. Mind you, these were serious minded people o. After I had resent the email, I realized that I had made another error again. Then I had to start apologizing – I didn’t even know if I was apologizing for my first error or my second error or both. Then I sent another email to make up for the first two and it turned out that I had made yet another error. It was embarrassing sending emails apologizing to ten people every time.
It sucked mehn!
They were like ‘dude, what’s wrong with you?’
My manager then called me and told me to create bulletproof for every document/email I sent out. My manager was a fantastic person and he guided and mentored me in my first three months at Andela. From then on, I became really careful. I would sit and read and read and read before sending out anything.
However, working with Andela was also rich and fulfilling. It always felt like you were a part of magic because you recruit people who don’t know anything about tech and before your eyes, they evolve. For example, a Bisola who studied Agric science in UI and has never written a code, ever, apply to Andela. Then in 6 months, the same Bisola is already a badass developer and before you know it, she is taken away to the US and is working with the Microsoft development team. Do you know how that feels? That is wow! It is fulfilling.
Today, I am a business developer. I help businesses develop from the stage of ideas till they become full fledged businesses. I develop marketing strategies and handle feedbacks on your MVPs – minimal viable products; so basically I am all about building businesses from the idea stage to the stage where product/service is ready for the market. As a business developer, the things I learned as Recruitment Associate at Andela has come in very handy. As a business developer, you must know what hands you need and what hands you must source for.
Somehow, when I look at my journey, everything has come to add up into who I am today.”
