The Christ Church Mapo had four earlier structures before this magnificent cathedral was built. Mr. B Shobowale, an architect of Unique Architect Design, was commissioned to draw the architectural design. The church history holds that he was “wonderfully and spiritually inspired” to design the cathedral.

The church made a decision at their meeting held on 10th June 1962 not to settle for a local contractor to handle the construction of the church. When it came down to making a choice of a foreign firm that would handle the construction, the church had to choose between Messr Cappa and Dalberto or P. Commazi & Co. In the end, it was agreed that the firm of P. Commazi & Co should construct the edifice.

Its foundation stone was laid on 27th March 1965 and it was eventually dedicated on 8th January 1977. The total cost of the completed building was N500,000 (Excluding the cost of furniture and other equipment). The construction lasted twelve years!
