“In my church, I work as a sound engineer. One day in August of 2007, I spotted a young, fair lady and I said to myself: ‘that girl is fine’. Apparently she had just joined the church then, she joined the church January 2007. Maybe I had set my eyes on her before July/August 2007 o, I wouldn’t know but when I spotted her and realized that ‘ahn-ahn, this girl fine’ was in July/August 2007. That was why in August this year, I wrote on Facebook: “ten years of friendship, five years of marriage. It can only be God.”

Back to 2007. I approached her that ‘fine girl, how are you’. In the course of our friendship, she asked me for my age. Just like that! I had estimated that she at the worst we’d be age mates because I had found out by then that we had graduated from secondary school in the same year. So, boldly, I told her my date of birth. Then she replied that she was born the same month and the same year. It turned out she was 9 days older than me. We continued our friendship from then on. It was all just friendship at the time. Friendship and nothing more.

In December, I proposed to her. She asked me to give her a week. A week passed and she gave me a reply that burst my head. She said she didn’t want my type. She explained – everything about us was the same. We were both ND holders, in fact she had her ND as far back as 2001, I had mine in Banking and Finance in 2002. We both never advanced beyond that so from her standpoint, we were both ND holders, same age, same everything. She wanted something more, she wanted someone who would strive for more than just average. She said she could only take me if I reached for more and that challenged me. Then I counter-proposed that we should still give the relationship a try still and then if in 6-7 months there was no progress for me, then we could go our separate ways. She agreed.

After 2-3 months together she encouraged me to take DLC form but I didn’t even know what DLC was about. One day, she called me that she was coming to visit. To my surprise, she handed me the DLC form she bought for herself and she told me that if I was interested in the program he would help me procure it; of course I would give her the money for the form. I did, after all there’s no big deal about buying a form. In the end, I was admitted for Political Science and that was it.

On the 1st January 2012, I came back from Watch Night service and slept. A friend called me and we began to chat, he was the first friend who called me. Then I told him, randomly, that in 200 something day I’d marry. When I said that, I didn’t have money. In fact, all I had was N12, 000 in my account. The guy said an amen. Immediately, I called my girlfriend and told her the same thing. She agreed. The guy called me back and said he had counted the number of days and that it would be sometime in September. It turned out that the number I gave was September 15 which was the birthday of my fiancee.

The next day, my fiancee and I went to see her parents to inform them that we were getting married that year and to let them know what exact date we wanted. That way, we gave them enough time to do everything they needed to do so we could have whatever we wanted. I just never wanted that September date to shift. We did our introduction in March/April.

While we began to plan our wedding afterwards with September 15 in our minds, the families were not even thinking wedding. They didn’t even have a plan. It was around July that we realized that families were not saying anything about wedding. Then we approached her big aunty who assured us that we’d definitely have our wedding but we may not get a September date. I then told the big sister that we had gone somewhere to pray and they had told us that her happiest day is the day she must marry and that since her happiest day was her birthday, we were stuck. Her big aunty then compromised and we got September. Actually, to be honest, we did not go anywhere to pray.

We eventually got married on September 15, 2012.”
