Manila, Philippines

“I got here in June 13, 2013. I came here as a student athlete on scholarship through basketball. Honestly, if you ask me, I don’t like it here – the country is a poor one. There are many homeless people in the Philippines unlike their neighbouring Asian countries. Most of them leave the country to work abroad so that they can cater for their family; there are no job opportunities even for Filipinos let alone a foreigner. Even the ones with degrees don’t have jobs. The women mostly work as nannies outside the country.

They also claim to be hospitable but that’s is only if they CHOOSE to get to know you, otherwise, you’re on your own. And another thing about the Filipinos, they take their friendships seriously.

My first experience with their food is one I would never have had if never left home. I have had to be careful of what I take in because most if their foods are made with rice and Pork meat. Everything that they have is all centred around rice and pork. For example, their local delicacies are Chicken Adobo, Chicken Afritada, Pork Afritada, Pork Steak…everything is just rice. Is that one food? It makes me miss Amala and Ewedu.

Also, around here, I hardly get beauticians to help me with my hair; plus, the things to make the hair grow healthy is quite expensive around so I kuku just cut my hair. I would never have had to go through all these if I was at home, you know.

What I miss the most is the Ibadan food: Amala and Ewedu to be precise.”
